I don't want to ignore what today is about. I want to remember those that took part in this entire incident and those that have fallen. I will always remember what happened that day: I was on my way to class at FIT in New York City... going up the escalator, I heard some students talking about a plane flying into one of the towers. By the time I got to class, all classes were cancelled. I decided to walk downtown to see what was going on. At that point, I was able to get pretty close and it was before the second tower fell. I remember seeing men in business suits walking past me, covered in debris from head to toe, carrying their attache cases. It was a lot to take in and I decided to head back to my dorm room. I remember the eerie silence everywhere. For the first time ever, New York City was dead silent. I got to my dorm room and fellow students and friends gathered in my room around my television. We watched on the news that the second tower had just been hit and fell. My brother and sister-in-law were celebrating their wedding anniversary in Hawaii at the time and were distraught not being able to get in touch with my Father... as was I. See, he worked for the Fire Department of New York for 35 years. He was a supervisor at the time and was down there when the second tower was hit. Luckily he got to shelter in an abandoned school. That week at school, and some following weeks, we often had to report to the basement due to bomb scares. It has been 11 years, but it took until about 2 years ago for all of this to hit me and for me to shed tears. It put me in a state of shock and disbelief for a long time. I am very thankful my friends and family were safe from the whole incident. My father, brother, boyfriend and I visited the One World center this summer during our visit to New York. While the site is something that is beautifully done, it was hard to see and be in that spot. It was a lot to take in... and sad to see so many people there treating it as a tourist attraction.
In remembrance... Never Forget.
